"위험하게 전용된 것(dangerously dedicated)"이 아니라면, 물리 디스크는 보통 슬라이스를 포함합니다. "da0s1"과 같이 슬라이스 번호는 s와 함께 장치 이름 뒤에 붙습니다.
슬라이스, "위험하게 전용된" 물리 드라이브, 그리고 다른 드라이브들은 파티션을 포함합니다. 파티션은 영문자 a부터 h로 나타내는데 b는 스왑파티션, c는 전체 슬라이스 또는 드라이브와 같은 크기의 사용되지 않은 파티션을 나타냅니다. 이것은 Section 10.5>에 설명되어 있습니다.
